› Work-Study Positions

Primary Department Contact: Financial Aid

The Federal Work-Study program allows students to earn a paycheck by working a part-time job on or off campus while gaining valuable experience. Money received from federal work-study does not count as income on the FAFSA. Students must be enrolled in at least 6 units (half-time) to be considered, and it is awarded based on financial need. A student must complete the FAFSA and meet other qualifying factors.

The Federal Work-Study program is facilitated by the Financial Aid Office. For students interested in learning more about their eligibility to participate in federal work-study positions, and to get a list of federal work-study-only openings, please contact Fullerton College’s

› Adult Short-Term Hourly and Student Assistant Positions

Primary Department Contact: All Departments on Campus

To inquire about current job openings, please contact the specific department, center, or program you are interested in working with
directly. Positions become available as hiring needs arise within each department.

› Student Assistants:
Must be actively enrolled in a minimum number of units within the district (typically at least 12 units during Fall/Spring) to qualify
for student worker exemptions.

› Adult Hourly (Short-Term):
These are community members or non-students hired to fill a temporary surge or seasonal need. By California Education Code, short-term hourly workers cannot exceed 160 working days in any fiscal year.

On campus employment is available to F-1 students who are registered for a minimum of 12 units. You may work on campus a maximum of 20 hours per week when school is in session, during holidays, and vacation periods.

You will need the following documents to apply for a social security card:

• Job Offer Letter from a department on campus
• Social Security Administration letter of support from the ISC
• Social Security Application and directions

› Job Search Safety

Finding a job is an exciting step. However, scammers are becoming increasingly sophisticated in how they target job seekers; therefore, it is important to be aware that fraudulent job postings and recruitment scams can sometimes appear on websites, social media, and other places where students search for opportunities. Scammers may pose as real employers, recruiters, or even individuals connected to a company or job search platforms, such as LinkedIn or Handshake, to make an opportunity appear legitimate. Even with strict vetting processes, scammers are getting trickier with how they go about scamming job applicants. The best way to protect yourself is not to be afraid of opportunities, but to pause, ask questions, and don’t hesitate to get guidance from credible sources before sharing personal information or accepting an offer.

› Job Safety In-Practice: Red Flags to Watch Out For

Employment scams are often designed to obtain your money or personal information. The following situations don’t automatically mean a posting is fraudulent, but they are good reasons to pause and verify the opportunity before moving forward.

• You are asked for money or financial information:
  Legitimate employers will not ask you to pay to: deposit a check and send money back, exchange cryptocurrency, purchase equipment, provide credit card or bank account information during any part of the application process. Never send money or participate in a monetary transaction as part of getting a job. If an employer makes this request, stop the interaction and contact the Career Center.
• The employer’s contact information doesn’t match the organization:
  Check the employment recruiter’s email address, phone number, and website against the organization’s official website. Legitimate organizations typically use an official company or institutional email domain (for example, @fullcoll.edu). Be cautious when someone claiming to represent an established organization uses a personal email account such as Gmail, Yahoo, or Hotmail. Whenever possible, confirm the position on the organization’s official careers website and verify that you are communicating with a legitimate representative.
• The hiring or interview process feels unusual or rushed:
  Be cautious if you receive an offer immediately after submitting your résumé, following a very brief interview, or without a meaningful conversation about your qualifications. Interviews conducted entirely through text or online chat also warrant verification.
• The job description focuses more on money than the work:
  Be cautious of postings that promise unusually high earnings for minimal work, use vague descriptions of responsibilities, or emphasize how much money you can make rather than what you will actually be doing.
• The posting or recruiter interactions contain numerous errors or inconsistencies:
  Spelling, grammar, formatting, or company-name inconsistencies can be warning signs, particularly when combined with other concerns. While an occasional error can occur in a legitimate posting, multiple inconsistencies are a reason to investigate further.
• You are asked for sensitive personal information too soon:
  Be thoughtful about sharing your Social Security number, driver’s license, passport, banking information, or other sensitive information. It is very uncommon for a legitimate employer to ask for this information during an interview.

› Take a Moment to Verify

If something about a job opportunity doesn’t feel right, you don’t have to decide immediately. Taking a few minutes to verify an opportunity can help you make an informed decision.

1. Look it up: Search for the organization and position on the employer’s official website. Is the position listed on the organization’s careers page?
2. Check the contact information: Does the recruiter’s email address, phone number, and website match the information provided by the organization?
3. Do your research: Search the organization’s name along with terms such as “scam,” “fraud,” or “complaint” to see whether others have reported concerns.
4. Ask questions: A legitimate employer should be able to clearly explain the position, responsibilities, hiring process, and compensation in everyday human language. If it feels like you are speaking to a bot, you are probably speaking to a bot.
5. Consider the big picture: One red flag alone does not necessarily mean an opportunity is fraudulent. However, multiple warning signs together are a good reason to pause, investigate, and seek guidance.
